                              Pumpkin Girl
                              by Christina Sng

                              She lights the candle
                              In the carved pumpkin,
                              Waves an incantation
                              To remind of its promise.

                              Like a flamethrower
It spits out a spear of fire,
                              Burning the contract
That bound it to its caster.

                              The charred head falls from
                              Its unmarred flesh stick,
                              Rolls onto the carpet,
Leaving a trail of black paint.

                              Pale thin arms reach
                              For the smiling orange thing,
Propping it on its mangled neck, as
Scores of arteries seal it intact.

                              The pumpkin girl exhales
A bolt of fire into the sky.
                              She takes a deep breath,
And steps out into the night.
