Safe in Their Cryogenic Chambers
by C. A. Gardner
(with apologies to Emily Dickinson)

Safe in their Cryogenic Chambers--
Frozen past Pain on a hopeful Noon--
The dreamers await their Resurrection--
Veins of Snow--
In titanium Tomb.

Bobbing along on the crest of Eons--
Castaways dying--but never Dead--
Slumber--chaste stasis--
Through time's Tumult--Ageless
Figments of Life
In a drowsing head.

Worlds wheel--unwaking--their Life Eternal--
Asteroids crash--
And suns decline--
Voyagers drift--indestructible--Timeless
Miniscule Ships
On a Quest Divine

A transplanted native of the Finger Lakes region, C. A. Gardner holds master's degrees in English literature and library science, and currently serves as cataloger at a public library. She has had nineteen stories and over a hundred poems published by venues like The Doom of Camelot, The Leading Edge, Mythic Delirium, Twisted Cat Tales and Raven Electrick. Two stories and a poem earned honorable mention in The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror (12th, 13th, and 15th editions). Gardner attended Clarion West in 2004 and is also an avid black-and-white photographer, particularly of surreal and horror themes.
